 Welcome to Mrs. Schanz's 5th Grade Class! Minimize

     Welcome to my new website for the 2009-2010 school year!  This site will provide a lot of valuable information about my Reading, Social Studies, and Language Arts classes.  Updates will be made frequently hopefully making this a resourceful tool for both my students and their parents. 

    
 Social Studies Minimize

Monday, 3/8 Students will complete in-class processing essay.

Tuesday, 3/9 Students will complete Internet tutorial.  www.tutorial.historyalive.com

Wednesday, 3/10- Chapter 8 Test  Facing Slavery

Thursday, 3/11 - Preview Chapter 9.  Picture Walk and Read as a whole class.

 Reading Minimize

Monday, 3/8 - Introduce reading selection The Golden Lion Tamarin Comes Home.  Picture Walk text.  Student will use predicting skills.  Students will review vocabulary for this selection.  Students will write Thank you letters for the Leader Dog Assembly.  

Tuesday, 3/9 -  Read and discuss The Golden Lion Tamarin Comes Home as a class.

Wednesday, 3/10 - Book Talks.  Reading Zone Time.  Students will meet with me individually to discuss reading progress and current literature choice.

Thursday, 3/11- Library (Allow some time for students to read.  I will be checking to make sure everyone has a chapter book which is within their reading level.

Friday, 3/12- Book talks.  Students will conference individual with me about their current literature selection and reading progress.  Students will be given reading zone time.

* Weekly Reading Practice Requirements

Students should read for a minimum of 30 minutes seven days a week at home.  Students will now be required to complete a READING LOG in attention to their 16 summary sentences a week. 

In order to improve your reading skills, you must practice reading.  You will be required to read 40 pages every Monday- Thursday and 40 additional pages every weekend.  To keep you accountable for this reading I am requiring that you write one sentence summarizing every five pages you read.  Your sentences must have capitalization, punctuation, and be recorded on the Reading Log I provide.  If you start a new book, you must record it on a new sheet.  On Monday mornings I will be checking that you have read 40 pages over the weekend and recorded eight sentences.  I will check again on Friday morning.  Extra Credit will be issued for recorded reading above and beyond the basic requirements.

 

 

    
 Language Arts Minimize

Monday, 3/8- Spelling pages 227 - 229 Young Authors Mystery first draft should be completed by Tuesday.  Time in class will be provided for students to tie up loose ends.

Tuesday, 3/9 - Writers workshop (Young Author Mysteries).  I will be meeting with students in small groups.  Students should be working on the peer editing/editing piece at this point). 

Wednesday, 3/10 - Writers workshop (Young Author Mysteries).  Students will have time in the computer lab to type Young Author Mystery.   These must be typed at school, NOT AT HOME. 

Thursday, 3/11- Writers workshop (Young Author Mysteries)  Students will continue typing in the computer lab. 

Friday, 3/12- Spelling Test, pass back Friday Folders.

* Students should be filling out their planners and having them reviewed and signed by a parent daily.

          Come practice your reading skills on Jake, a trained therapy dog, who loves nothing more than
