DUNDEE MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION POLICIES
(Revised according to the 2009 schedule)
The following policies have been established and adopted to help increase departmental consistency by standardizing procedures, providing common policies and safety procedures and to ensure the students and parents, fair and reasonable policies in procedures and participation grading.
IT SHALL BE A POLICY OF THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT THAT:
Students must be in the locker room(on days they are required to dress in uniform) or the gymnasium (on days they are not required to dress in uniform) when the bell rings, or they will be tardy.
1. Horseplay will not be tolerated.
2. Students will be dressed in an appropriate uniform. The uniform (shirt and shorts) will be offered by the school district. Students must also have gym shoes and athletic socks. Turf shoes, those with raise soles, or shoes with soft black, green, etc. soles which leave marks on the gymnasium floor will not be tolerated.
3. Students will not be permitted to wear jewelry of any kind, such as earrings, watches, rings,
medals, etc. during physical education class. This is for the safety of all individuals.
4. Students shall not chew gum, eat candy, or food of any kind in physical education class either indoors or outdoors. No drink bottles are allowed in the gymnasium. Students may use the drinking fountains in the gymnasium or hallway.
5. Students are to report all pre-existing injuries, infections or condition believed to be contagious to their teacher. If a student is injured during class time, they are to report the injury to the teacher immediately.
6. Students are to keep their valuables locked in their lockers at all times, even for the few minutes you enter the shower room.
7. Students are encouraged to have their physical education uniform washed at least once a week.
8. Students are not to leave the gymnasium or playing field unless they have been given permission by their teacher. Students receiving a pass from the office to leave class must show the pass to the teacher prior to leaving the class.
9. Students are not to enter the equipment rooms, weight room, training room or physical education offices with out permission.
10. Physical education students are not to be in the “athletics locker room” unless given permission.
11. Students are not to bring glass containers of any kind into the locker room.
12. Students are not to enter the shower room for any reason wearing street shoes.
13. Students are to only use school issued padlocks. Students are encouraged to purchase a lock from the school by paying the required fee in the office and submitting the receipt to the teacher. Any lock placed on a locker that was not issued by the school, will be cut off. The school is not responsible for missing locks.
14. Students are to use the assigned small locker to store their gym clothing. The long lockers are to be used during the class period for your street clothing.
15. Students are not allowed to be in the locker rooms without a supervising teacher giving permission.
16. All students are reminded to read their students handbook as all students are subject to the school policies in addition to the physical education policies.
17. Students refusing to participate will receive a deduction of four (4) participation points.
PARTICIPATION POLICIES
Physical education is a participation class. Full benefit from the class cannot be realized without participation. Therefore the following policies shall be adhered to for the purpose of maintaining maximum levels of participation by all students involved in physical education classes.
A. POLICIES GOVERNING NOT DRESSING FOR CLASS:
1. Students are expected to dress for class participation, in the appropriate uniform each day they are present at school. Failure to dress without a note from a doctor will result in the deduction of four (4) points from a student’s participation grade.
2. To ensure class participation, students will be allowed to borrow physical education
clothing from the school (prior to attendance) should they not have clothes with them.
Refusal to borrow clothes will result in the following participation point deductions:
First offense: loss of four (4) points/remain in class for that hour.
Second offense: loss of four (4) points/snap suspension/sent to office/teacher calls home.
Third & Fourth offense: loss of four (4) points/referral to office/administration calls home.
7.5 Weeks: Loss of 12 points will result in failure. Not dressing for class three (3) times.
9.0 Weeks: Loss of 16 points will result in failure. Not dressing for class four (4) times.
B. POLICIES GOVERNING DOCTORS NOTES:
1. Students presenting doctor’s notes will be excused from physical education activity.
Students must inform their doctor of the type of note needed:
* specify the injury or illness.
* length of time that the student should be excused.
* open ended notes will result in getting another doctor’s note to return to class.
All doctor limitations for physical education will also apply to after school athletics.
1. Students presenting a doctor’s note for non-participation in physical education class shall provide a copy of the doctor’s note in the office as well as to the instructor. The student may continue to be evaluated by one of two options: (teacher discretion)
*writing a research paper in any area of physical fitness, sports, or athletics.
*being involved in class activities through scoring, officiating, etc.
Long term injuries or illnesses may result in withdrawing from the class and not receiving credit (“W” on the students’ report card).
2. Students writing a report from a doctor’s note to be excused from physical education
classes shall:
*report to class each day for roll to receive a library pass.
*write a 150 word report due at the end of the hour.
The teacher may make exceptions on days of class work such as testing, instruction, etc.
3. Students failing to complete the assignment as described will receive a four (4) point
deduction from their participation grade for each page of the report that is not
completed.
4. Students with injuries that interfere with their writing capabilities shall have the same
amount of time they were incapacitated to turn in the report after they become capable
of writing. Class time will be spent in the library doing the necessary research and
reading to complete the writing of the paper.
C. POLICIES GOVERNING PARENTAL NOTES:
5. Parental notes requesting students be excused from physical education shall be honored
provided the note requests limited participation, stating the nature of the parents
concern and the activities (ex: running, jumping, push-ups, no physical activity, etc.) in
which the student should not participate. A parental note to excuse a student from
physical education class will result in no after school athletics.
6. Students presenting parental notes WILL BE REQUIRED TO DRESS FOR CLASS and participate in those activities which are not in conflict with the parental note, even if the note states no participation.
7. Students may present a total of two notes per marking period and each note presented must be dated and signed by the parent or guardian. A note is valid for only ONE DAY. Parents who feel their child should be excused beyond the two days shall call the instructor.
D. PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADING PROCEDURES
Emphasis on participation will be reflected in the following policies:

Each student will begin the trimester with 100% participation.
Deductions may be made accordingly:
Not dressing . . . . 4 points
Policy violation . .. 1 - 2 points (participation issue, misuse of equip, etc.)

E. Any student who passes the participation aspect of the class will pass the class unless the
average of their participation grade and test grades falls below the passing range.
F. On the marking period scale any student who fails to dress on the 3rd time (7.5 weeks) or 4th time (9.0 weeks) will fail the marking period. Other deductions may cause failure before the 3rd or 4th time not dressed.
G. The teacher will inform the student any time points are deducted from his/her participation
grade. At that time however, the teacher is not obligated to inform the student of the total
participation point deductions. Students may request information on their total participation
point deductions at the appropriate time.
